Gordon Moreland: Declining Young Adult Adventist Membership

"How could I, at 61, be one of the younger members of my church"? (Cliff Goldstein, Cliff’s Edge – The Truth of the Universe, Adventist Review, Jan 2017)

WHY YOUNG ADVENTISTS LEAVE GOD'S CHURCH

"A study conducted by the Office of Archives, Statistics, and Research asked what event triggered former members’ decision to leave the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The most significant reasons respondents gave for leaving were:
  • Perceived hypocrisy in other church members".
(Petr Činčala, Ph.D., Director, Institute of Church Ministry; David Trim, Ph.D., F.R.Hist.S., Director of Archives, Statistics, and Research, General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists; and Galina Stele, D.Min., Research and Evaluation Manager, GC Office of Archives, Statistics, and Research, The Narrow Road, Adventist Review, 22 Dec 2016)

STANDARD GENERAL CONFERENCE PRACTICE

Our brethren from the General Conference threw a large celebration in San Antonio, where cheese was served to the saints.   Even though Ellen White said "Cheese is still more objectionable; it is wholly unfit for food." (Ellen White, Ministry of Healing, p 302)(see graphic at left from http://2015.gcsession.org/en/attending/food-service-at-the-session/)

While the Bible doesn't say eating cheese is a sin (see 1 Samuel 17:18), lying is.

THE SEEDS OF INIQUITY:  FALSE CLAIMS

"Currently, Adventists hold 28 fundamental beliefs" (Seventh-day Adventist Church, Beliefs, https://www.adventist.org/en/beliefs/), including #18:  "The Scriptures testify that one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is prophecy. This gift is an identifying mark of the remnant church and we believe it was manifested in the ministry of Ellen G. White. Her writings speak with prophetic authority and provide comfort, guidance, instruction, and correction to the church." (Seventh-day Adventist Church, Beliefs, https://www.adventist.org/en/beliefs/church/the-gift-of-prophecy/)

When the General Conference leadership persistently scorns Sister White's inspired counsels:

SENIOR GENERAL CONFERENCE LEADER PUSHES UNBELIEF IN AUSTRALIA

"Sanitarium Health and Wellbeing is enhancing its focus on the spiritual health of its 1,700 employees. The Seventh-day Adventist-owned healthy food company has appointed Gilbert Cangy, former world church youth director, to the newly created role of pastoral services manager, based at the Berkeley Vale, New South Wales, Australia head offices." ( Former Youth Director to Lead Company Spiritual Program in Australia -- Gilbert Cangy will coordinate efforts to strengthen Sanitarium’s spiritual development, Adventist Review, 16 May 2017)

By handing out hot drinks:  "He told how people brought their lunch, as leaders provided some special treats and hot drinks"  ( Former Youth Director to Lead Company Spiritual Program in Australia -- Gilbert Cangy will coordinate efforts to strengthen Sanitarium’s spiritual development, Adventist Review, 16 May 2017), since "the free use of hot drinks is debilitating."  (Ellen White, The Ministry of Healing, p 305)

Showing once more that "the Jesuits, by their very calling, by the very essence of their institution, are bound to seek, by every means, right or wrong, the destruction of Protestantism".  (Giovanni Nicolini, History of the Jesuits, p v)

BUT NOT EVERY GENERAL CONFERENCE LEADER IS A FULL JESUIT PRIEST

If you walk down the hall of the General Conference first thing in the morning, the place smells like Starbucks.  Some functionaries bring in the coffees, others have coffee machines -- right there in the building.  Since "Tea and coffee drinking is a sin, an injurious indulgence, which, like other evils, injures the soul.

"SDA" IDOLATRY

These darling idols create an excitement, a morbid action of the nervous system." (Ellen White, Counsels on Diet and Foods, p 425)

HYPOCRISY IN ACTION

Even though these various activities are questionable -- at best -- for a Christian who believes "Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." (1 Corinthians 10:31, Holy Bible), for Adventist leaders who claim to believe in the great prophetic revelations of Sister White, it was crass hypocrisy.

A fact which was not lost on Gordy Moreland, a Loma Linda trained physical therapist, who left  Adventism for an "all grace" offshoot in Sunshine.

AND THE PROBLEM IS REALLY WITH HYPOCRITICAL CHURCH LEADERS?

"If we’re not reaching people in the industrialized West with what we have been given, the problem’s not with the gift but with us". (Cliff Goldstein, Cliff’s Edge – The Truth of the Universe, Adventist Review, Jan 2017)

But it would be so easy for "the Brethren" to solve this mass exodus of youth and young adults:  quit talking Sister White, and, in fact, drop all those fundamental beliefs that leadership just don't believe in no more.

They'd still be idolaters pushing debilitating practices, but at least they wouldn't be hypocrites no more.
